Resources for NC Arboretum Classes

New classes starting at the Arboretum.

Take your Tai Chi practice to the next level by practicing outdoors every week in the Arboretum’s gardens. The Tai chi form is from a 72nd generation, Taoist Master. Each person will be taught individually and will be able to progress at their own pace regardless if they miss a class. This class is open to new students or student’s who have attended one of Tony’s previous classes or classes with another instructor. There will be four sessions each four weeks long. In this adult education class, you may make up a class during the next session.

Tony Smith, Chief Instructor, is well known to Arboretum regulars as operations manager of the Savory Thyme Café. He has been studying Shaolin Kung Fu since 1976 and began training in Tai Chi under various teachers in 1984. He was certified to teach two of the three styles of Ni family Tai Chi in 1994 and has been an instructor, competitor, and judge in Kung Fu and Tai Chi for many years.

Sal Mandarino, Asst. Instructor,  I grew up in Astoria (Queens), New York.  I trained and worked as an advertising printer in NYC later moving to the Hudson Valley NY, where I lived for more than 30 years, retiring as a civilian from the US Military Academy in ’06. I moved with my wife Josefa to Hendersonville NC, where we have lived since that time. I’ve also been a long-time practitioner of raja yoga. My interests and practices have included White Crane TaiChi, CiGong, Yang TaiChi 24 Form and currently, Wu style TaiChi, mind & body Earth Form.  My travels and teachings have allowed me to learn from these varied teachers;  Sifu Bob Feeser, Sifu Travis Ginn, Master Wu Wen-Ching and Dr Paul Lam.  In ’09 I joined the Hendersonville Chorale and have been a member ever since.  After joining the UU of Hendersonville, I also sing in their choir.

This page has photos and videos of certain classes that I teach at the NC Arboretum. They are not intended to be a stand-alone teaching system, but a resource to help practice away from class.

The 8 Postures of I Chuan

Hold each Posture for 1-5 minutes. This will be some of your most productive training. If you only have a little time to devote to the internal arts. These are the best to practice.
